PRODUCT : Paradox NUMBER : 158
VERSION : 3.0 & up
OS : DOS
DATE : December 8, 1992 PAGE : 1/4
TITLE : Installing Paradox on Netware Lite
This Technical Information sheet is written for Paradox 4.0. If
you are installing versions of Paradox earlier than 4.0, replace
any references of \PDOX40 with \PDOX35 for Paradox 3.5 or
\PARADOX3 for Paradox 3.0 respectively.
If you are using Paradox 4.0, you will need to use Netware Lite
1.1 (contact Novell, if you need to upgrade from Netware Lite 1.0
to 1.1).
Install Netware Lite as instructed by the Netware Lite
documentation.
PART I: Preparing the server.
Create the following subdirectories on the SERVER's local drive:
C:\PDOX40 This will contain the Paradox program files.
C:\PDOXDATA This will contain the Paradox data files
(including the PDOXUSRS.NET file - if you are
using Paradox 4.0, or PARADOX.NET - if you
are using versions earlier than 4.0)
As SUPERVISOR, use the NET utility to create the network
directories specified above. The steps are:
o Type NET to start the Netware Lite NET utility.
o Select "Supervise the Network" from the Main Menu.
o Select "Network directories" from the "Supervise the
Network" menu.
o Press "Ins" to add a new network directory.

TITLE : Installing Paradox on Netware Lite
Add the following directories:
PDOX40
------
Actual directory path: (Type in the path for the Paradox PROGRAM
directory) i.e.: C:\PDOX40 if you are
using Paradox 4.0, c:\PDOX35 if you are
using Paradox 3.5 etc.
Default access rights: READ
PDOXDATA
--------
Actual directory path: (Type in the path for the Paradox DATA
directory) i.e.: C:\PDOXDATA
Default access rights: ALL
Create the following mapped drives:
(NOTE: For purposes of this example, we will use drive letters H:
and I:. If you have already used these drive letters, please
substitute any other available drive letters).
Drive Network Directory Server Your Rights
----- ----------------- ------ -----------
H: PDOX40 NEBO ALL
I: PDOXDATA NEBO ALL
If you prefer, you can create these mapped drives at the DOS
prompt:
NET MAP H: PDOX40
NET MAP I: PDOXDATA
PART II: Installing Paradox
Install Paradox on the server's local drive. During the
installation, you will be asked if you will be accessing data on
a network. Respond with a "Y". An additional screen will
display, prompting you for the network type and location of the
Paradox network control file.

TITLE : Installing Paradox on Netware Lite
Network type: Other (number 8 for Paradox 4.0, number 6
for versions earlier than 4.0)
Network control file: I:\ (or whatever drive is designated for
PDOXDATA)
Proceed with the rest of the installation.
NOTE: If Paradox has already been installed on the server's local
drive as a non-networked version, you can change this by running
NUPDATE.EXE from the \PDOX40 directory. This will allow you to
change the Paradox network information.
After installation, go to the directory where you installed
Paradox and use the DOS ATTRIB command to make all files except
the PARADOX.SOM (PARADOX3.SOM for Paradox 3) read-only.
1. Type ATTRIB +R *.*
2. If you are installing Paradox 3.5 or 4.0:
type ATTRIB -R PARADOX.SOM
3. If you are installing Paradox 3.0
type ATTRIB -R PARADOX3.SOM
PART III: Preparing the client.
Create a "home" or private directory for the user on their local
drive:
C:\> MD PDOXPRIV
After the client software has been loaded and the client is
logged to the network, use the NET MAP command to include the
PDOX40 and PDOXDATA drive letters.
NET MAP H: PDOX40 (or whatever drive is designated for
PDOX40)
NET MAP I: PDOXDATA (or whatever drive is designated for
PDOXDATA)

Add the H: drive to the client's PATH statement. This can be
done in a batch file with the following line:
PATH H:\;%PATH%
To start Paradox, change to the \PDOXPRIV directory, and type
PARADOX -SHARE
Run the Paradox Custom Configuration Program. For additional
information on the Custom Configuration Program, refer to Chapter
15 of the Paradox 4.0 Getting Started Guide (for versions earlier
than 4.0, refer to Chapter 14 of the Paradox User's Guide).
In Custom, select Net |SetPrivate from the main menu.
Change the private directory to C:\PDOXPRIV.
Press <F2> to save the configuration. Choose "Network" when it
prompts you where to save the PARADOX.CFG file (if you are using
Paradox 3.0 this file will be PARADOX3.CFG).
At this point, all users should be able to run Paradox when
starting from their C:\PDOXPRIV directory. For additional
information, see Technical Information Sheet 618 for a general
overview of how to use Paradox on a network.
Special attention should be given to the Paradox Network
Installation Guide (for versions earlier than 4.0, refer to the
Network Administrator's Guide). The first two chapters of this
guide are critical to Paradox use on any network. Also of
importance is the chapter titled "Configuring Paradox for network
workstations".
